When most people think of cupping therapy, they imagine those stationary cups leaving circular marks. But there’s another powerful style I offer at Tranquil Birth and Bodywork called Cupping in Motion. It’s changing the way people experience pain relief, mobility, and relaxation.
I want to take a moment to explain what cupping in motion is, how I use it during sessions, and the amazing benefits it can bring to your body and overall wellness.
What is Cupping in Motion?
Cupping in motion is a technique where I place cups on the skin while you move your own body.
Rather than leaving the cups completely stationary or gliding them myself, I guide you through specific, gentle movements designed to stretch and activate the muscles and fascia under the cups.
This approach allows us to target tight areas more precisely and encourages a much deeper release. It’s an active style of therapy that engages both your muscles and connective tissues while benefiting from the decompressive effect of the cups.
During this service, you’ll wear comfortable clothing. Typically, shorts and for ladies, a sports bra; to allow easy access to key muscle groups while still maintaining your comfort and modesty.
How I Practice Cupping in Motion
1. Preparing the Skin:
I apply a small amount of oil if needed to areas where cups will be placed. Before we start, I’ll also take a few minutes to discuss your goals or doctors/physical therapists goals to ensure we target the correct areas.
2. Applying the Cups:
Using soft medical grade silicone cups, I create a gentle suction on key areas such as the back of the neck, shoulders, arms, hips, back, legs, or feet.
3. Movement:
With the cups in place, I guide you through slow, controlled movements; think reaching, squatting, lunging, or rotating. Each motion is chosen to work with your body’s natural patterns and restrictions.
4. Adjustments and Flow:
I monitor your comfort closely and adjust suction or cup placement as needed to ensure we’re getting the best therapeutic results. This session typically last 30 minutes.
5. Follow up:
I follow up each session with a 60 minute massage and additional stationary cupping session.
The Benefits I See in My Clients
Increased Blood Flow:
Movement combined with suction dramatically boosts circulation, bringing oxygen and nutrients to tissues and helping to flush out waste.
Fascial Release and Mobility:
By moving under the cups, your body creates an active stretch and pull through the fascia and muscles, which releases restrictions more effectively than passive therapies.
Decreased Muscle Tension:
Engaging your muscles while they are lifted and decompressed by the cups helps relieve deep knots and tension without overwhelming pressure.
Improved Joint Health and Flexibility:
Clients often notice improved range of motion in joints like the shoulders, hips, and spine after just one session.
Faster Recovery and Injury Prevention:
Regular sessions can support faster recovery from workouts, reduce chronic stiffness, and even help prevent overuse injuries by improving tissue health.
Enhanced Body Awareness:
Because you’re an active participant, cupping in motion helps you build better awareness of how your body moves and where you may be holding tension.
Deep Relaxation:
Even though you’re moving, clients often report a surprising sense of calm and relaxation during and after the session as the nervous system resets.
What to Expect After a Session
After your cupping in motion session, you might feel lighter, looser, and more mobile. Mild too deeper marks can appear where the cups were placed; this is a normal reaction to increased blood flow and typically fades within a few days to a week.
I recommend staying hydrated along with no intense workout session or strenuous activity after receiving this service. Give your body time to integrate the work after your appointment. You’ll likely continue feeling improvements over the next 24–48 hours as your tissues respond to the therapy.
