Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative therapy through the use of suction, by means of glass or silicone cups. This ancient form of cupping therapy has been documented as far back at 400BC. It was even documented that the use of animal horns were once used for cupping therapy. (Don’t worry no animal horns here!)
What are the benefits of cupping therapy in a massage setting?
Most massage therapist use downward physical pressure to alleviate muscle tension through the use of elbows, fist or thumbs. While cupping therapy uses suction to pull tissue up (negative pressure), allowing the tissue and muscles to relax much faster. Creating less fatigue on the massage therapist and more comfortable for the client. Besides relaxing muscles quickly it is also great for the following:
- Jaw pain
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
- Tennis elbow
- Hand pain caused by repetitive use (dental hygienist, dentist, nurses, surgeons, musicians etc.)
- Mid to lower back pain
- Hip pain
- Knee pain
- Ankle/foot pain
- Arthritis
- Fibromyalgia
- Deep tissue
- Sports massage and injuries
- Cellulite, scars and stretch marks
- Trigger point therapy
- General relaxation and wellness
- Plantar Fascitis
This is just to name a few of the many benefits of cupping therapy.

What about the marks?
I’ve saved the best for last! Cupping marks! NO, they are not bruises! The marks are a result of blood coming to the surface. They may last a few hours to a couple of weeks, depending on the area. They could be bright red in some spots and near nothing in others.
